The Hero’s Journey - Part 3. Finding Direction as a Man: Orientation During Life Transitions

Feeling lost as a man doesn’t mean failure. Learn how orientation and inner mapping can restore clarity and direction.

Periods of transition rarely announce themselves clearly.
They arrive as uncertainty, restlessness, or a sense that life no longer fits the way it used to.
This is where many men feel most alone.

The need for orientation

Rather than quick solutions, what is often needed is orientation:

  • Where am I in my development?

  • What phase is completing itself?

  • What is being asked of me now?

This is the essence of what I call Internal Cartography — understanding your inner terrain so you can move forward without forcing yourself back into an outdated role.

From confusion to clarity

When a man understands that he is in transition rather than decline, something softens.
From there, clarity can return — not as certainty, but as direction.

A first step

If you recognise yourself in this, you may benefit from gaining a clearer sense of where you are on this inner journey.

There are - roughly speaking - archetypal 5 stages men go through, let’s call them: Page, Knight, Prince, King and Sage. You may remember from the fairytales you heard as a child. And in order to become King, the Page, Knight and Prince have to pass the dark forest, slay some dragons and solve a couple of really tricky riddles in order to free the fair princess and finally arrive at the throne.

You could see me as someone who has lit a warming campfire in the midst of the woods. Where you can sit down for a while and gather your strength. Have a cup of warming brew. Tell your story. Ask for directions.
You can stay for as long as you need. And if needed, I may even accompany you for a while until you have found your way out of the forest.
